The works of Gerard Pieterszvan Zijl were at that time in high esteem, andVerkolje endeavoured to imitate his highly-finishedmanner. He was chiefly employed on portraits ofa small size, though he occasionally produced his-torical subjects and conversations, which werepleasant in colour, and touched with delicacy.
