Halabja, Iraqi Kurdistan, once home to 5,000 Kurds attacked by Saddam Hussein with chemical weapons in March 1988. After the gas bombs fell the town and homes were also subject to destruction by conventional bombs and bulldozer. A memorial site has been created for the graves of the victims overlooking the town. Ba'athist Anfal campaign against the Kurds at the end of the Iran-Iraq wear claimed thousands of Kurdish lives. Halabja survivors returned home to rebuild their lives. Photo by Sheri Laizer
