Raynaud's phenomenon produces intermittent whitening of the fingers, with tingling, numbness or burning sensations. The whitening is triggered by exposure to the cold or emotional disturbance, and is caused by constriction of blood vessels in the hand. As the hands warm up, the fingers turn blue and then red (as here), before returning to normal. The condition results from an underlying disorder, such as vascular disease, or from occu- pational injury to the hands (caused by vibra- ting machinery or excessive typing, for example). Treatment is of the underlying disorder.
