Clowes, Windermere. Westmoreland. 1868. 1 ft. It is remarkable that this very distinct variety should have beenunconsciously introduced into a fernery (that of Mrs. Taylor atIffotsholme Farm, Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere). Shewished, Mr. Clowes writes, the gardener to ornament withferns a sort of paved bank near the garden ; he got a lot of fernsanywhere and this was one of them. It was there first noticedby Mr. Clowes, who adds that it was then a fairlv tall-growingplant,—at least 2 ft. high,—but since its division it has adopted amuch more dwarf habit, which as far as can be yet judged of, isshared bv its seedlings.
