Many gas and utility meters crowd the area below a staircase behind a multi unit building. These gray utility meters are checked monthly by the utility company employees to check energy consumption. This group of meters is shows the volume of energy usage and demand that urban living creates along with the importance of energy in modern living. Energy usage and conservation is an increasingly important topic in modern life. These analog meters are slowly being replaced by electronic meters that enable remote energy usage monitoring and billing, thereby reducing the manpower required to check the meters and bill the utility customer. Modern meters, compile consumption data digitally and then relay it to the central office for billing. These older style meters require an employee to travel to every building for reading.
