Leishmanin skin test. Young girl undergoing a leishmanin skin test to see if she is eligible for the leishmaniasis vaccine. The test is carried out by injecting leishmanin under the skin. A reaction indicates the presence of the disease, so vaccination is needed. Leishmaniasis is a tropical disease which comes in two forms: visceral (kala- azar) and cutaneous, both caused by Leishmania sp., a parasitic protozoan. The diseases are transmitted by bites from infected sand-flies. Vaccines contain dead or weakened disease-causing organisms. Following vaccination, the immune system becomes sensitized, helping the body to fight the disease. Photographed in Iran.
