Denniston Mine was a major producer of good quality coal from 1879-1967. It was an isolated place with a harsh climate, often wet and cold. Life for the miners and their families was hard. Denniston was famour for The Denniston Incline - an inclined plane that took coal down the mountain and sent the empty trucks back up using gravity. For many years it was the only way up to and down from the mine. Men, women and children rode the coal wagons and accidents were common. This image shows a steel wheel that had a cable or hawser running over it. It was made in Sheffield, England and exported to the then colony of New Zealand.
