HEATING. While the plumbing work is being done, another set of men have been putting in theheating apparatus. Selection. The selection of the heatingapparatus will depend upon local custom, expense and personal preference. Threeprincipal methods present themselves withsome special features to recommend each. These are the hot airfurnace, the hot water heater, and the steam boiler. The simplestand least expensive in the cost of installation is the hot air furnace(Fig. 57), which also has the merit of introducing a continuous supplyof warmed fresh air into the house. Next in cost of installation, is. Fig. 56. Compression Cock. 68 62 BUILDING SUPERINTENDENCE the system of direct steam heating; when once installed the cost ofmaintenance is less than the hot air furnace. This is due in part tothe fact that in direct steam heating, the already tempered air of therooms is simply raised to the desired warmth, and fresh air must besupplied by other means. This system has the advantage of beingmore easily adapted to the heating of distant parts of the house, andis positive in its action at all times.
