Recycling electrical goods. Cathode ray tube (CRT) television sets waiting to be separated into plastics, electronic circuits, and glass, and recycled. Cathode ray tubes must be processed with care because they contain a vacuum, which presents an implosion risk. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains toxic metals, here lead, cadmium and phosphorus, that must be disposed of safely. Other metals, such as gold and copper, can be resold at a profit when recovered on a large scale. This waste is at the VALDELEC centre in Poitiers, France. VALDELEC, with four recycling centres around the country, was the largest such company in France in 2003.
