1920 illustration -The Roanoke colony - Also known as the Lost Colony. It was an attempt by Sir Walter Raleigh to found the first permanent English settlement in North America. The first colony established by governor Ralph Lane in 1585 on Roanoke Island failed, The second colony established two years later is known as the Lost Colony because its population disappeared. It was feared the inhabitants were killed by Indians, but later a mixed race tribe were found in the Blue Ridge Mountains, some of which had English artifacts in their possession including crossbows and a spinning wheel.
