Man Butchers goat in Kathmandu
A butcher at work early morning in Kathmandu November 2004 This street runs parallel to New Road and has many food shops selling fish fruit vegetables and meat It has the atmosphere of a street market Here a shaft of light highlights the floor of the shop on which the man is preparing cuts of meat Being a Hindu nation cows are revered and their meat not easily found or openly sold This is goat but buffalo is also eaten widely The shops are very small just a few square metres that front directly on to the road Shoppers stand in the road to make their purchases as there isn t enough room to enter the premises Simple wooden doors close the shop at night Flies often cover the meat but it is freshly butchered and quickly sold This is winter when the flies are less of a problem
