Preparing dog food in Antarctica. Expedition dog handler Cecil Meares (left, 1877-1937) and British Army officer Lawrence 'Titus' Oates (right, 1880-1912) cooking dog food at the blubber stove on 26 May 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition and led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 explored on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Dogs and ponies were only used for part of Scott's attempt to reach the South Pole, manpower being used for most of the trek. Scott, Oates and three others died in 1912 on their return journey from the South Pole. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting.
