Wales is one of four constituent countries of the United Kingdom; it is located on a peninsula in the south west of the UK covering an area approximately 170 miles north to south and 60 miles east to west and is bordered by England to the east and the Irish Sea to the west. Its capital city, Cardiff, with its own National Assembly is located in South Wales where two thirds of the population of Wales reside; there is also a significant population concentration in North East Wales. The country has a coastline of over 750 miles, Mid Wales, the North West and South West is rural with hilly and mountainous terrain, there are three national parks, Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast and four areas of outstanding beauty being Anglesey, Clwydian Range, Gower Peninsula and the Wye Valley.
