Born at Doncaster in the year 1823, ofsound Methodist stock, he was carefullybrought up; and at fourteen years of agehe entered a commercial house. Thedeath of his much-loved mother broughtup a religious change, and deepened hiswhole being, spiritual and to preach at the age of six-teen, he was soon eagerly sought afterby crowds of admirers. After preparingfor the ministry in the Richmond Theo-logical Institute, he entered upon circuitwork in Kent, at Newcastle, and in hisnative county of Yorkshire.
