The exact origin of thefighting at Tabriz is not clear. It was reported that some Rus-sian soldiers claiming to be stringing a telephone wire, mountedthe roof of the police headquarters about 10 oclock at night,on December 20, were challenged by the Persian sentries, andreplied with shots. Serious street fighting commenced the nextmorning, and continued for several days. The Acting Governorreported that the Russian troops indulged in terrible brutality,killing women and children in the streets and hundreds ofother non-combatants. There were about 4,000 Russiantroops and two batteries of artillery around the city. About1000 of the Tabriz fidais took refuge in an old citadel, calledthe Ark. They were without artillery and poorly arme
