Strongyloidiasis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic nematode (roundworm) Strongyloides stercoralis, the cause of strongyloidiasis. Humans become infected through contact with contaminated soil. Infection is often asymptomatic, but may cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea and a cough. It can also cause a red rash around the anus, due to larvae penetrating the skin to re-enter the body rather than passing in the stool.
