Dolomite rock, close-up. This carbonated sedimentary rock, rough to the touch, contains mainly magnesium and calcium double carbonate (dolomite). This specimen dates from the Lower Jurassic (164 million years ago). Rocks of this type are used in the glass industry. The process of dolomitization exchanges the original limestone calcium ions for magnesium carbonate. This destroys the original sedimentary structures. This specimen is part of the Geoscope geological park, located between Les Monts-Vert and Albaret-Sainte-Marie, central France.
