Belt of Calms. — The belt of calms is the most rainy of all the belts (Figs. 298, 300, and 301), because its hot, moisture-laden air is ris-ing and cooling. After a clear night in that region, the sun usually rises in a cloudless sky. As the morning advances and the heat grows more intense, the damp air rises more rapidly; then small clouds appear and grow steadily until rain falls from them.
