An antique or vintage wooden sack truck or sack barrow, with a timber axle and a single wheel bound by an iron tyre, rests on a sunlit cobbled path in the historic Romansh-speaking village of Ardez, in the Lower Engadine Valley in Graubünden or Grisons canton, eastern Switzerland.

Ardez, Graubünden or Grisons canton, eastern Switzerland: an antique or vintage wooden sack truck or sack barrow, with a timber axle and a single wheel bound by an iron tyre, rests on a cobbled path in this historic Romansh-speaking village built on a terrace above the River Inn in the Lower Engadine Valley. Ardez, now part of the municipality of Scuol, was first mentioned in 804 AD as Ardezis, but was known in the 1800s by the German name Steinsberg. The village is renowned for its superbly restored traditional 1500s and 1600s houses, many decorated with heraldic symbols, Romansh inscriptions and artworks, either scratched in sgraffito or painted. The best known property, the ‘Adam and Eve House’, displays a 17th century painted depiction of the Garden of Eden and the Fall of Man on its facade. A majority of the residents in Ardez still speak Romansh, a legacy language of the ancient Roman Empire.
