Lung cancer. 61-year-old man with a swollen chest wall, indicating the presence of lung cancer (mesothelioma). Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer of the membrane lining of the chest cavity and lungs (pleura). It is usually caused by asbestos exposure, although this patient has no history of asbestos contact. There is a large gap between exposure and disease development, and it may be that the patient cannot remember being exposed to asbestos. The tumour often reaches a large size before diagnosis, by which time the prognosis is poor.
