Dreer's garden calendar : 1897 . dreersgardencale1897henr Year: 1897 HARDY CLIMBING PLANTS. Clematis. Clematis Paniculata Clematis Paniculata {Japanese Virgin's Bow- er). See colored illustration on back cover of Catalogue. This handsome hardy climber though introduced from Japan some years since, is still but little known, although one of the choicest and most satisfactory climb- ing flowering plants we know, and is des- tined to become very popular. Our own appreciation of it is such that had we space to plant but one climber, we should not hesitate to make this plant our choice. The plant is of strong rapid growth with small dense cheerful green foli- age giving it a grace and elegance possessed by no other hardy climber and even did it not flower at all, it would be one of our most desir- able vines. The colored illustration which adorns the back cover of this catalogue gives only a faint idea of the grace of the flower; these appear in the greatest profusion during August and continue until late in the fall, are of a white color and most deliciously fragrant. The plant succeeds in almost any position, sun or shade, and does equally well in sandy or stiff soil, not only is it well adapted to run up all kinds of supports such as trel- arbors, verandas, stumps of old trees, festooning, etc., but is just as useful for planting among rock-work, sloping banks, covering graves, or in fact, any position where a graceful vine is desired and in positions where but few really choice plants succeed. We offer three sizes: First size, Extra strong 3-year-old plants which will produce an immediate effect, 50 cts. each; !? per doz. Second size; Strong selected 1-year-old plants, 20 cts. each; $ per doz. Third size, Good young plants, 15 cts. each; per doz. Clematis Coccinea. A very handsome, hardy climber, bearing thick, bell-shaped flowers of a bright coral red color; blooms with wonderful profusion from June until frost. 25 cts. each, 5 for $ Clematis
