Pale pallor of the skin in the face of an 86 year old female patient, due to anaemia. In anaemia the blood has a reduced capacity to transport oxygen to the body. It is usually caused by a low concentration of haemoglobin (82 here, normal levels 120-180 g per litre of blood), the oxygen carrying molecule inside red blood cells. The haemoglobin molecule requires iron so iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia.
