Engineering Test Reactor (ETR) installation at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, USA, 18th December 1956. The ETR was built to support early development of nuclear technology. It was the largest and most advanced materials test reactor in the world at the time, and operated for 25 years. It facilitated the development of advanced nuclear propulsion for the Navy as well as supporting the nuclear energy industry. The ETR reactor vessel is seen here being dropped into place using a hoist.
