The rails on these framed tables,raised an inch or two from theground, have probably helped to preservemany from the rotting effect of thedamp, rush - strewn floors, and weredoubtless appreciated by sitters be-cause they could, by placing their feeton them, avoid the draught as well as the moisture. The enormous bulbs so characteristic of the period were frequentlybuilt up, even in olden times, of pieces fastened round the leg andcarved.
