Boats on the Sangker River. Journey from Battambang to Siemp Reap. You’ve seen the temples around Siem Reap. Your backpack is full of guilt trinkets you couldn’t resist buying from the throngs of children surrounding you. You’ve had a good night (or two) out on the town. You have had your happy pizza or $1 beers and are ready to move on. At this point you could do a variety of things. We opted for a boat ride. We had some time to spare before getting to Phnom Penh. Trevor, one of our Grisl contributors, came back at us with an option he’d heard about from a buddy. It’s a boat journey from Siem Reap to Battambang and though a bit expensive (by Cambodian standards) at roughly $20 a head it’s well worth a look when venturing out of the Angkor Wat scene. Most bookings for this trip can be done at your hostel in Siem Reap. We stayed in Hak’s House (highly recommended FYI) and he was able to hook us up with tickets and a general idea of what to expect. Bus pickup from your hostel is about 6:30am to maybe 7 am and the price is included in your ticket (or should be, but best to double check). The bus will drop you off at the docks and there will be people trying to sell you quick snacks upon arrival and give you fliers for places to stay in Battambang. This is also your last chance to hit the head because after this you are on the boat until it stops for a lunch break about half way through. It’s definitely not a short trip and you can expect to be spending anywhere from 5-8 hours on the boat. During the wet season (May to October) the ride will be shorter due to the higher amount of water in Tonle Sap Lake and the Sangker River. The dry season (November to April) makes navigation much more difficult. With limited viable waterways due to shallower water levels, running aground and traffic jams are more frequent. Also, dry season means more tourists. We took the trip towards the end of September and it was great. Hardly any tourists, lots of locals, ple
