Sampan fishing boat passing a tourist sampan, moored near the Ap Lei Chau Bridge, Aberdeen Harbour, Hong Kong, China
The fishing port of Aberdeen, on the south coast of Hong Kong Island, is a major attraction to both the local population and tourists. Its catch accounts for over one third of Hong Kong's total catch. Local vessels fish the waters of the adjacent continental shelf in the South and East China Seas. Trawling is the most important fishing method, but long lining, gill-netting, purse-seining, hand lining and cage trapping are also practised. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant, decorated in the style of an ancient Chinese imperial palace, was designed and built by Hong Kong magnate, Stanley Ho for HK$ 30 million. Since opening in October 1976, it has attracted over 30 million visitors. Adjoining is the Tai Pak seafood restaurant. Shuttle barges and sampans bring visitors from piers along Aberdeen Promenade (behind the camera).
