As you will readin this report, in 1997, Bostoniansalso enjoyed a safer Boston - thanksto the dedicated efforts of the menand women who serve and protectthis city every day - and the closecooperation of residents in everyneighborhood. This year. Part Onecrime fell 15 percent to the lowest level in twenty-nine years. Homicides dropped to their lowest rate inthirty-six years, and the domestic violence homicide rate hascontinued to decline. The Police Departments great success in neighborhood policing is the result of partnership with business people, community groups, aiid local crime watch groups. Thanks to these stronger relationships between police and neighborhoods, a recent police Department survey shows that residents notice the difference; 75 percent feel safe
