WILLIAM RENN1E, TORONTO, CANADA. 37 BENNIES PRi: PURPLE TOP SWEDE SWEDE TURNIPS. (Sow 2 to 4 lbs. per acre In drills.) Add 5 cents per lb. for Postage on Turnips. Culture.—The soil best adapted for all Turnip crops is that of a loamy description, but may be grown upon heavy clay soils, if given thorough cultivation. Sandy and gravelly soils will yield but a light crop. The ground for turnips should be manured and pre- pared in the fall. Many growers apply farmyard manure in the spring just before sowing the seed, which is not a good plan; if a moist season, no bad effects wilt result, but should the summer be dry the crop is apt to be very rough and rooty, and not that clean, well-shaped handsome crop which every grower expects. The seed may be sown upon drills twenty inches apart, or upon the level ground; the latter is best upon dry or well-drained soils. Sow Swedes from June to the middle of July, and Aberdeens, Globes and Greystones, from middle-of July till end of August. Thin from 12 to 18 inches apart in the row, and keep thoroughly cultivated. {^RONNIE'S PRIZE PURPLE TOP. Experience extending over the last thirty years has proved this variety to be one of the very best among the many varieties of Swedes. Rennie's Prize, the result of judicious selection, is one of the hardiest, most productive and most nutritious varieties n cultivation. It is a large purple top yellow variety; beautiful globe shape, with single tap root, free from coarseness of neck, and for uniformity of crop and keeping qualities is superior to all other Swedes. It produces a very heavy weight per acre and keeps sound and good until late in the spring ; flesh always sweet and rich. £ lb. 10c, § lb. 15c, lb 25c REININIE'S EMPRESS.—See p. 38. i lb. 15c, J lb.
