Leukaemia blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of blood cells from a patient suffering from myeloid leukaemia, a form of cancer. Two white blood cells (leucocytes, blue and pink) are seen, with a red cell (erythrocyte, red). Myeloid leukaemia causes over-production of certain cells in the myeloid tissue of the bone marrow, leading to reduced levels of other blood cells. A lack of red cells causes anaemia, with bruising and bleeding due to a lack of platelets. Infections may also develop, because white cells do not attack pathogens. Treatment includes chemotherapy, transfusions and bone marrow transplants. Magnification: x6000 at 6x7cm size.
