Kikusuien is a modern Japanese garden that was created from the Meiji period to the Taisho period - listed as one of the Three Great Gardens of Kanuma during its heyday. The other two gardens no longer exist. During the Muromachi period Kanuma prospered as the castle town of Kanuma Castle, built by the Mibu clan. In the center of the old town is Yata no Machi Central Park that opened in 1998 in addition to the Japanese garden it is also a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. This garden was built by Ichiro Hasegawa who made his fortune as a hemp merchant and named by Fusetsu Nakamura, a calligrapher and painter.  A dry stream dominates the garden with many unusual stones that were collected by the client from all over the country.
