GeneralGeorge Rogers Clarke of Virginia led a column toattack and oust the English. Now, taking up James Moore again, whom we leftat Slab Spring, but who later settled at Belle Fon-taine, it is of interest to know whether, when he wentto the Illinois, he had been there before. Several authors claim that he and one Ben Linnhad been sent ahead of Clarkes column in 1778 tospy out the land; some assert he was a soldier underClarke. On that I have no certainty, although hewas, in fact, a soldier, but if in Clarkes command, Ido not know. Clarkes rosters as published are in-complete, and much concerning that expedition hasnot been printed. Not all who were Clarkes soldiersgot land grants for service in Clarkes , who says that William Biggs, of whom Ihave spoken, was a soldier and got a military grantof three sections, does not disclose that the grant was [32]. GENEALOGY for the Clarke service. We shall see that JamesMoore was a soldier and received land grant also. In the booklet of the Moore Reunion beforecited, it is said James Moore was a soldier underClarke. It is historical that Clarke sent two menahead. There is much comment on that matter inIllinois Historical Collections, Vol, V, Virginia Ser-ies, Vol. II, Kaskaskia Records 1778-1790, page 22et seq., of Introduction, and pages 7 to 10 et seq., ofthe book. See also reference to, on page 8, ClarkesMemoir. Conquest of the Territory Northwest ofthe Ohio, i p. 467. Illinois Historical Collections,Vol. IX, p. 39. In these references the Moore who wassent on by Clarke with Linn is styled S. More. InIllinois Historical Collections, Vol. VIII, GeorgeRogers Clarke Papers, 1771-1778, Vol. Ill, VirginiaSeries, there is reference to a John Moore killed byIndians, and Captain J. F. Moore. I know nothingof them, but at page ivii I note Clarke sent BenLinn and Samuel Mo
