Evening view looking NW over the remains of Strata Florida Cistercian abbey in the valley of the River Teifi, Ceredigion, Wales, UK. The former abbey church is central with parish church of St Mary', graveyard & yews to the R, Great Abbey Farm (the C17th Stedman house on site of the monks refectory) to L. Abbey originally founded in 1164, beside the Fflur brook miles SE of the present site, by Robert fitz Stephen with monks from Whitland Abbey. The Lord Rhys (Rhys ap Gruffudd) Welsh prince of Deheubarth drove the Anglo-Normans from the area & moved the monks to the present site in 1165 where the abbey blossomed under his patronage. The grave of Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym (1320-80) is in the graveyard marked by a yew tree planted by the monks in the C14th.
