He sent him (Tiice more to or-ganize a parish and erect a chmxh; but, far-seeing as thatgreat prelate was, and himself full of grand ideas for thefuture of Catholicity, he could not for a moment haveanticipated such results as have followed from the ap-pointment of the Rev. A. J. Donnelly to the parochialdistrict of St. Michaels. Nor has his infliience been confined to this was appointed by Aichbishop Hughes to frame andprepare a uniform system of parochial books and ac-counts, which proved a work requiring great experienceand knowledge, and attest his ability. Since 1873 he has been a member of the councilof his Eminence the Archbishop of New York, a re-sponsible as well as honorable position, in itself a proofof the high esteem in which he is CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD. A BOUT the yeai- 1842, the tremendous oppositionmade by the vaiious Protestant denominations,when the CathoHcs asked the restoration of the oldNew York plan of aiding all religious schools, had amost beneficial effect in arousing the whole Cathohcbody on the island to a sense of their rights and gave them new life, and was followed by a promptextension of Catholic chm-ches and institutions. At that time, the Catholic, starting from St. Marysnorthward along the East River side of the island, lookedin vain for any sign of his faith till he reached FiftiethStreet, where St. Johns was just struggling into exist-ence, except the little German Church
