RAILROAD CONSOLIDATION. The Alniansa-Valencia-Tarragona line, referred toabove—which is a line of considerable importance, builtand owned by a company entirely Spanish—has just beenconsolidated with the Ferrocarril del Norte, also , with its headquarters in Madrid. The most important is that ofthe Maquinista Terrestre y Maritima, where locomotivesalso are built ; the shops of that company are at Barce-loneta. The second in rank, which your correspondentvisited, is that of the Sociedad Material para Ferrocarrilesy Construcciones, which has its oftices in Barcelona andits works at the little town of Pueblo-Nuevo, near by. It may be noted here that it is no easy matter to get in-formation in Spain, as all the companies, both railroadand industrial, seem to fear comment and criticism. Inall cases special permission must be obtained to visit orinspect shops, and this is not always readily granted.
