Iglesia Santa Maria, Betancuria, Fuerteventura, Canary Isles, Spain. Canary Islands lie 100 kilometres west of north African coast, in the Atlantic.


Betancuria: Iglesia Santa Maria, Fuerteventura, Canary Isles: the town's principle church destroyed by pirates in 1593, rebuilt 1691. Betancuria was founded in 1405 by Norman soldier Jean de Bethencourt and was the island's first capital. In 1593, the pirate Jaban reduced everything in the town, including the Santa Maria church, to a pile of rubble and church was rebuilt in 1691 and is now open to the public, together with its museum, from 10am to 6pm. The town`s main source of income derives from passing tourism. The Canaries are a group of islands lying 100 kilometres to the west of the north African coast.
