The Utah State Capitol, with numerous Corinthian columns, was designed by architect, Richard Letting, in the neo-classical style and built between 1912 and It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Between 2004 and 2008 the Capitol underwent a restoration and renovation programme, including the addition of base isolators, allowing the building to survive a magnitude earthquake. The International Bison sculpture, in the foreground, stands in front of the north-west corner of the Council Hall (Old City Hall), on the south side of Capitol Hill. The navy blue front of the bison, with Utah State Coat of Arms, represents the Utah State Flag. Dates 1847 and 1896 represent the when the Mormon Pioneers first entered the Great Salt Lake Valley and when Utah was admitted as the 95th Sate of the Union. The International Flags on the white rear of the bison represent the many groups of people that contributed to the great economic growth of the Salt Lake area during the first fifty years after the emigration of the Mormon Pioneers from Illinois. The Council hall stands behind the bison.
