Portrait of Louis Ombredanne (1871-1956). Ombredanne was a French paediatric and plastic surgeon born in Paris. He developed new surgical techniques for breast reconstruction following mastectomy, and surgical repair of an undescended testis. In 1907, after two fatal anaesthetic accidents, he invented an anaesthetic inhaler to improve safety. This device was tested successfully on over 300 patients. In 1929 Ombredanne described malignant hyperthermia, a condition of newborns during anaesthesia. The disorder was historically known as Ombredanne syndrome.
