Carpets were un-known and the floors were scrubbedonce a week. Mother used to scrubhalf of the floor and dry it then putthe children on that half until the other half was scrubbed. In thosedays women had no washboards orwashmachines, but boiled the clothesand laid them on a bench and beatthem with a paddle and did somerubbing with the hands, in thatway they were cleaned. —SamuelBachman.
