In 387 , the Gauls invaded Rome and took control of the city, except for the fortress on the Capitoline Hill. All the inhabitants fled the city, except for the senators who sat silent in their chairs. The Gauls took them for statues until one Gaul touched a senator's beard. The insulted Roman struck the Gaul. The Gauls retaliated, killing all the senators.
