It is grooved for twelve one andone eighth inch cotton ropes, the ropes of W. E. Hooper &Son, of Baltimore, Md., being used. The course of the rope, commencing at the top of theflywheel on the side nearest the observer, is first aroundthe generator pulley, over the idler, around the generatorpulley again and then back around the flywheel, thenfrom the generator pulley alternately around the flywheeland the idler, twelve times. From the last wrap on theflywheel it passes around the generator pulley, and thenis carried through the floor around the lower deflectionpulley mounted on timbers between the foundation piers, then around the sheave on the tension carriage, backunder the upper deflection pulley to the first groove of. As will be seen, there are twice as many wrapsaround the generator pulley as around the flywheel, equal-izing to a certain degree the difference in surface of con-tact which would otherwise exist between the two. Thediameters of the sheaves and pulleys are as follows: thegenerator pulley is fifty-nine inches, the sheave on the ten-sion carriage sixty-six inches, the idler pulley and the twodeflecting sheaves, sixty inches each. Connection between the generator pulley and gen-erators is made by Filer & Stowell friction clutches. Asection of the clutch which is giving good satisfaction isshown in Fig. 1. The friction surface is on the inwardlyentending flange of a spoked wheel. Against this is madeto bear the double set of friction arms, one set beingpressed against the outside of the flange, the other beingdrawn against the inside of the flange upon the operationof the clutch.
