Chilehaus in Hamburg Germany

The Chilehaus, built from 1922 to 1924 according to plans by Fritz Hoger, is the founding structure of Hamburg's historic office district. It is the suprerne example of German Brick-Expressionism. The Chilehaus stands as the most dominant and comrnanding landmark within the of fice district, which in itself represents one of the most impressive urban constellations in Germany from the 1920s. It stands as a symbol for the rise of Hamburg's inner city to commercial importance. Fritz Hoger designed the Chilehaus for the Hamburg businessman and banker Henry B. Sloman, a successful salt-petre trader with Chile. The new office building was sited on two oddly shaped parcels of land. A small street between the parcels, the Fischertwiete, was built over and became an inner-courtyard. The main entrances to the building lie at either end of this courtyard. The imposing long ten story high main body of the building is constructed of reinforced concrete on the inside (inner supporting beams and ceilings). The outer walls were laid in brick which had been fired to a color spectrum from dark red to violet as typical in 13nck-Expressionism. This outer layer of bricJc was connected to the reinforced concretc core to create a bearing system. The building stretches from west to east, developing its slender forrn within the constnctions of the streets framing it, and thins to a daring point at the eastem end fully filling the unusually shaped land parcel. With one straight and one curving side the point, designed in connotation of a ship's bow, asserts itself monumentally as the dominant feature of the building. A srnall public square placed directly at this point creates a unique urban effect. Through its position in the surrounding historic street pattern, the integration of the small street in the middle of the building, and in the context of of Pice buildings built in its wake, the Chilehaus develops an expressive dynamic of views. To this aim Pritz H8ger designed the outside of th
