The effect on tlie corn of the heat from the engine room which penetrated through the shaft tunnel in the bottom of the hold is shown in Table 31. The corn located di- rectly on the shaft timnel increased 27° F. dui-ing the voyage, while the corn located the same height as the | timnel, but halfway between the tunnel and the sides of the hold, increased 7 de- grees on the port side and 8 degrees on the starboard side, as is shown in figure 43.
