But the endsof the strap should not be sprung openmore than 1-32 in. when the brass ishome. When strap rods are used for siderods, the brasses should be 1-32 than the pins, and have 1-64 motion. After boring out and fac-ing the sides, take the brasses out of thestraps and fit them to the pins, beingcareful to have no bearing on the fillets. Solid side rod brasses should be turnedenough larger than the hole in the rodto require lYi tons per inch of the out-side diameter of the brass to press it intothe rod. When the brasses are bored. Thisline will now be i-i6 in. instead of]4, in. back of the center of the frontbrass, but the difference between theright length of the rod and the distancebetween the centers of the brasses, hasbeen divided between both ends of therod. With a pair of dividers scribe a circlesomewhat larger than the pin aroundthe centers, for use when setting thebrasses up in the lathe or boring mill. Main rod brasses should be bored 1-64in. larger than the pin and given 1-64in. lateral or side motion, being carefulto have the flanges the same thicknesson each side of the strap.
