Military honor guard at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, Hanoi, north Vietnam


Ho Chi Minh led the Việt Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the Communist-ruled Democratic Republic of Vietnam in north Vietnam in1945. He was the first president of Vietnam and Chairman of the Communist Party of Vietnam. His body lies in state in a gray granite mausoleum on Ba Dinh square in Hanoi, with a permanent honor guard clad gleaming white uniforms with red trim. The date on the wall in the background celebrates the establishment of the republic of Vietnam.
