Mikhail Leonidovich Gromov (born 1943), French-Russian mathematician. Gromov was born in the Soviet Union, obtaining his doctorate (1973) in Leningrad and later residing in France. He is a Professor of Mathematics at New York University, and also works at the IHES (Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies) in France. His main work has been in geometric group theory. He has also studied mathematical biology. His awards include the Wolf Prize (1993), the Kyoto Prize (2002), and the Abel Prize (2009). He was elected a full member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1997. Photographed in June 2010.
