He fought with great gal-lantry in numerous engagements. In 1862 General Milroycommanded a brigade under Pope in his disastrous cam-paign in the Valley, and was present taking active part, inmost of the battles fought in that campaign. In Novemberof that year he was made a Major General of Volunteers,being one of the three officers of that rank from Indiana.
