But the Empress replied: You are notexperienced enough for that work, nor strongenough to endure the hardships of life in Man-churia. What you may do is to serve in the hospi-tals of St. Petersburg, thus enabling the regulartrained nurses to go to the front. Almost withoutexception these young ladies acted upon this sug-gestion, and many of them did most excellent serv-ice, eventually becoming as useful as nurses who. Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia 137 had undergone the usual training in preparationfor such work. Some idea of the extent of this work may begathered from the single fact that in the year 1904the depot at Kharbin alone received from the Win-ter Palace headquarters, over which the Empresspresided in person, no fewer than eleven millioneight hundred articles. In addition to these thingsmore than a million dollars in money was collectedand forwarded for the purchase of surgical instru-ments and such other things as were sorely neededby the badly equipped Russian forces.
