A used One Dollar bill that is one of the small-size Silver Certificates issued between 1928 and 1957. It certified that there was on deposit in the Treasury of the United States of America "One Dollar in Silver Payable to the Bearer on Demand." This paper currency was only issued in $1, $5 and $10 denominations. Larger-size Silver Certificates were issued earlier between 1878 and 1923 and promised payment by the Treasurer in actual silver dollars. Silver Certificates have been replaced by Federal Reserve Notes since the 1960s. The certificates remain legal tender.
