Polycystic disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a 57 year old man's abdomen (transverse section). The liver (left) and a kidney (right) are filled with cysts (fluid-filled sacs, white). An inherited chromosomal defect causes multiple cysts to invade and grow in the kidneys and liver, which compromises the normal function of these organs. The cysts gradually destroy the tissue and may eventually cause organ failure.
