Penis circumcision. Image 2 of 9. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin (prepuce) from the penis. Circumcision is commonly practised in the Jewish and Islamic faiths, where individuals are circumcised during infancy or childhood. Others may choose to have circumcision for health reasons, such as eliminating a problematic foreskin. Adult circumcisions often require 4 to 6 weeks of abstinence after the operation to allow the wound to heal. For a series showing this procedure, see images C001/1994 - C001/2003.
